In 1998, polymer clay enthusiast and basket maker Victoria James returned from Ravensdale, a national polymer clay conference, and began her search for like-minded artists in the Sacramento region. In 2000 she found Marylu Elliott and her daughter selling polymer clay beads online. Additional members joined through a search of the National Polymer Clay Guild (NPCG) web site. The group began to grow, and monthly meetings, clay days, and the first formal workshop soon followed.

In 2003 the guild adopted the name 'Clayville California' and LaLa Ortiz created the Yahoo! Group which still continues today. By-laws were written and adopted in 2005 and in 2006 the first elected officers were inducted. There are currently 115 members in the Yahoo! Group and approximately 25 active guild participants.
